Summer Science Research Symposium

Summer Science Research Symposium

The 2018 symposium took place on Wednesday, July 25.

The goal of the one-day Summer Science Research Symposium is to exhibit the quality and breadth of undergraduate research in the sciences at the University of Dayton. The symposium will include a guest plenary speaker, student presentations and a poster session. Breakfast and lunch sessions provide an opportunity for networking with peers.

The ability to communicate scientific ideas and results to a broad range of audiences is a necessary skill for scientists and engineers. Presenting research results in a formal setting, whether through oral presentations or posters, is a constructive experience for budding researchers, and it helps to build students’ communication skills and prepare them for careers in the sciences.

The symposium committee accepts submissions from any students doing research in the sciences at the University of Dayton or the University of Dayton Research Institute. This includes students from the science departments in the College of Arts and Science – Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geology, and Computer Science. Work is also accepted from students who are doing interdisciplinary research in related fields such as engineering. Students submit 250 word abstracts through a submission website.

History

In 2016, Dr. Mathews organized and ran the First Summer Science Research Symposium, which consisted of an oral session with 5 presentations and a poster session with 8 posters. The symposium featured students from the Physics and Biology departments. This symposium was put together very last minute, but it was quite successful. The 2016 event received primary support from the Department of Physics.

Last year, with more planning, Dr. Mathews organized and ran the 2017 Summer Science Research Symposium, which was bigger than the previous year’s symposium. There were 7 oral presentations and 19 posters, and it involved students from Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Chemical and Materials Engineering, and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. The symposium was funded by the office of the Mann Chair in the Sciences, with additional support from the Department of Physics.
