Jean de Dieu Mukunzi

Jean de Dieu Mukunzi is the founder and executive Director of Ebenezer Healthcare Access a 501 (C) (3) nonprofit located in Dayton, Ohio to help immigrants address their social determinants of health by overcoming language and cultural barriers.  

Prior to his current position, Jean was a Population Health Project Manager at Ohio State University Medical Center.

Jean holds a Masters in Public Health Management from Wright State University, a Bachelors in Clinical Psychology from the National University of Rwanda and Professional Certificate in Project Management (PMP).

During 2021, Jean started medical translation services with content and cultural validation by a multilingual team composed of medical doctors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and pharmacists. This approach has been named by the National Resource Center for refugees and immigrants as one of the national best practices for translation.

In partnership with Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association, which includes 29 hospitals and health centers in the Miami Valley Region, Mr. Mukunzi was able to start a Care Coordination Agency, which currently serves hundreds of immigrants in the region.

Jean de Dieu Mukunzi is a public health specialist with huge experience spanning more than 17 years involving initiating, planning, implementing, controlling, and closing healthcare projects.

Jean conducted several research projects both in Rwanda and the United States, one focused on the assessment of refugees' health needs in Montgomery County, Ohio.

Throughout his career, he has marked success in project planning and implementation. For example, he has success with HIV/PEPFAR (President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) program in Rwanda. In 2008, the US President George W. Bush and (Michael O. Leavitt) the US Secretary of Health witnessed this project’s success following its positive impact in Rwanda. 

In the United States, Jean de Dieu has worked for both Public Health and Medicaid Managed Care allowing him a better understanding of needs and limitations in terms of immigrants’ access to healthcare by not knowing how to use Medicaid health insurance coverage.  

Mr. Mukunzi is multilingual of English, French, Swahili, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, and intermediate level of Spanish. He also holds an academic certificate in data analytics.
