Global Goals
Striving for the Common Good:
As the “University for the Common Good,” we are called to serve others through our work, teaching, scholarship, service, creative endeavors, and partnerships.
The United Nations Global Goals (also known as the Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs) can offer both a frame of reference and a plan for action that links our own efforts with an international movement to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all— without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
The Global Goals are a set of 17 broad goals to transform the human experience and the health of the planet by 2030. The global community has made tremendous progress in recent decades, but there is much work that remains to be done. To that end, the Global Goals build on the success of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), but with two major differences. First, whereas the MDGs called upon rich countries to support development for the world’s poorest countries, the Global Goals call for action from every sector — business, government, education, non-profit, and even individuals — in order to promote prosperity and protect the planet. Second, the emphasis on global is not a call to action on the other side of the world. Instead, it is an invitation to work locally for global change. Global means everyone, everywhere.

During the 2019 Brother Joseph W. Stander Symposium, we will explore the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Global Goals and the theme of the High Level Political Forum (HLPF).
Approximately 200 students, faculty, staff, and community members will take part in an interactive, cross-disciplinary, student-led event.
This event takes place Wednesday, April 24 in the Science Center Auditorium, with morning and afternoon sessions. Visit the Office of the Provost web site for more information and to register.
In May of 2018, faculty and staff came together for an all-day workshop on the Global Goals. Together, we learned how we could become part of the story of achieving an inclusive, sustainable, and resilient future for everyone — here in Dayton and around the world.
