Foundations Mini-Course
The Ethics and Leadership Initiative began offering its foundational one-credit mini course, UDI 170, in Summer 2021 as part of the Early Launch Program. It will continue to be offered regularly during the academic year. The course functions as an introduction to the ideals of the initiative, as well as a foundation for the undergraduate certificate.
Students in the course focus on three main areas: values, leadership and virtues. To introduce these ideas, the course primarily consists of journal assignments and peer discussions, alongside guest speakers, in-class workshops and documentary viewings.
In particular, we ask what really matters and why. We consider different models of leadership, and importantly think through not just how to lead, but also why we follow. Finally, we work to begin cultivating virtues, e.g., courage, integrity and allyship, that allow us to live by our values and be better leaders. In addition to the direct focus on ethics and leadership, UDI-170 students have conversations and reflections necessary to begin to discern and articulate their vocation.
The course is open to all students, regardless of whether or not they intend to continue on with the ethics and leadership certificate.
