Carl Allen’s Art Blakey Centennial Band

A Cityfolk JazzNet Legacy Concert

7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, Sears Recital Hall

“…a world class musician.”
- Pat Metheny

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Art Blakey—known worldwide for his Jazz Messengers—fellow drummer Carl Allen is touring a tribute band. Blakey (1919-1990) has long been an inspiration for Allen, who has remarked “My ultimate goal is to get to a level like Art Blakey,…who every time they sit down behind a set of drums it’s swinging.” While Blakey is legendary, Allen has his own impressive history, with over 200 recordings and a stint as director of jazz studies at the Juilliard. As Sid Gribetz of Jazz Times wrote, “more than just another fine drummer, Carl Allen has it all together as a bandleader, businessman, and producer, becoming a force in today’s jazz world.” Allen will be joined by Cyrus Chestnut, Jeremy Pelt, JD Allen, and Peter Washington.

Cityfolk Jazznet Legacy Concerts: ArtsLIVE is proud to extend a tradition established by Cityfolk, one of Dayton’s innovative arts presenters of the past: great jazz performances are now a part of our programming, thanks to the Cityfolk JazzNet Legacy Endowment.
