The Harlem Quartet

A Vanguard Legacy Concert

3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, Sears Recital Hall

“fresh, bracing and intelligent …”
- The Cincinnati Enquirer

For those who think chamber music is old fashioned, the Harlem Quartet is here to champion a new experience. The ensemble was founded by The Sphinx Organization of Detroit, with a mission of making classical music a more diverse universe. The original four members were all first prize laureates of the prestigious Sphinx Competition. Reflecting that heritage, the Harlem Quartet performs both standard repertoire (their concert will include Brahms) and work by traditionally underrepresented composers--in this case, Fanny Mendelssohn and the Cuban-born Guido Lopez-Gavilan. This is a Vanguard Legacy Concert that celebrates tradition while looking toward the future of chamber music.

Vanguard Legacy Concerts: Founded by Elana and Vincent Bolling, the Vanguard series presented great classical music at the Dayton Art Institute for five decades. The University of Dayton extends and expands that tradition with support from the Vanguard Legacy Endowment.
