Sustainability Leaders at UD

What is the Sustainability Leaders (SL) program?

Starting in the Fall of 2016, the UDSRL will be an integral part of the Hanley Sustainability Institute (HSI) and our ability to achieve the goal of becoming a leader in sustainability education. Sustainability Leaders (SL) will gain valuable experience aligned with their passion for sustainability and their chosen vocational path. As part of the SL experience with HSI, students will collaborate with fellow HSI team members towards current and future projects and programming. Current areas of emphasis include support for current and new UD sustainability academic programs, energy and sustainable solutions, water resources initiatives and local food insecurity projects.

Who should apply?

The SL program is first and foremost an experiential learning opportunity for all students at UD. Built into the experience for all Leaders will be a collaborative process of defining student learning outcomes, individual and group reflection and professional development support. Ideal candidates for the SL positions with HSI are students passionate about sustainability, knowledgeable about current sustainability initiatives on campus and around the greater Dayton area and are excited about the opportunity to gain experience in their desired vocation as part of the HSI team. Students best qualified for the majority of SL positions will have 1-2 years of coursework in an area that relates to the specific Leader position’s responsibilities. Successful SL will be highly self-motivated, creative students who are eager to be part of HSI as it’s needs emerge and evolve over the coming years.

How are applicants selected?

Sustainability Leaders are chosen in a selective application process. Each position description will provide details about position responsibilities and qualifications. Every SL position will require applicants to submit a resume and answer a questionnaire (linked from Handshake postings). A committee, including HSI team members, will review applicant materials by given application review dates for each position. Following review, SL candidates will be contacted for the interview process.

How are Sustainability Leaders supported?

SL positions will be posted to the University's student employment website, Handshake (Search Hanley Sustainability Institute for all openings). HSI offers a competitive hourly rate for the UDSRL program and weekly hours will vary from approx. 5-10 hrs/week.
