The 2023 Social Practice of Human Rights Conference is planned as a hybrid event. Virtual as well as in-person participation is possible. Please register regardless of how you plan to participate, and keep in mind that changes may occur.

Keynote: SPHR23 will feature three keynote speakers.
Plenary: SPHR23 hosts four plenaries featuring speakers addressing the conference's themes and their intersections.
Concurrent Sessions: SPHR23 will host some entirely virtual roundtables this year, and some hybrid/in person. These workshops and roundtable sessions will feature scholars, practitioners, activists and organizers on topics relating to the conference theme.
Workshops: SPHR23 will host workshops on Saturday.

Each day includes concurrent sessions; each session is 90 minutes and includes 3-5 presentations (10 minutes each) followed by discussion and Q&A. A moderator or discussant is assigned to facilitate each session.

Given the hybrid format of SPHR23 there are some concurrent sessions that are entirely virtual. You are welcome to leave to your hotel or home or you can stay at the venue and access the sessions from your laptop. We recommend bringing a pair of headphones if planning on staying at the venue for these sessions.

SPHR23 is a hybrid event. All sessions will be available for both virtual presenters and virtual attendees. For keynote, plenary, and concurrent session attendance, the links will be available closer to the conference date on our program page.

A paper must be presented by its author(s)
All paper sessions are 1 hour and 30 minutes long

Copy of the paper three weeks prior to the meeting should be emailed to hrc@udayton.edu. It is important that Discussants receive papers in advance of the meeting.

To be considered for post-conference publication, presenters must submit their SPHR23 paper (e.g. academic paper, report, manuscript, concept note) in its entirety to the Human Rights Center via email to hrc@udayton.edu by October 2, 2023.

All SPHR presentation abstracts will be available for participants on our website via eCommons - the University of Dayton's open-access institutional repository. eCommons provides a permanent home for scholarly work and is a part of an international network of institutional repositories called the Digital Commons, all administered by bepress, a division of Berkeley Electronic Press in Berkeley, CA.

On Nov. 2nd & 3rd, all SPHR23 in person keynotes, plenaries, concurrent sessions, and workshops will take place at Daniel J. Curran Place (formerly known as University of Dayton River Campus). For GPS purposes, the address is:

Dayton Airport is 30 minutes away from University of Dayton Campus. We do not provide shuttle services from airport to conference hotels or venue. Participants are encouraged to use ride-sharing apps, rentals or cab services.

UD Fac/Staff/Students: Those attending can use Lyft Pass to get to the conference at a discounted rate. Head to the website and use the code SPHRCONF. The pass is renewed daily.

Parking is available to all conference participants at no cost in the SPHR23 designated area.

Please enter the building from the North parking lot after turning left into Daniel J. Curran Place. The conference's staff will welcome you and be there to assist you throughout the conference.
A customized map will be available in the printed program booklet highlighting the spaces we will be using including associated events.
Directional signs will be displayed at the hotels and the conference venue to guide you to the classrooms.
All SPHR23 events will take place in spaces on the first and second floor of the building.

Curran Place is ADA compliant and strives to accommodate the needs of all SPHR21 participants.

Designated rooms for presentations are equipped with projectors, computers, screens, white boards, built-in sound system and AV equipment (USB, DVD player, cords). Mac users must bring their personal cables and adapters.

Presenters are encouraged to bring their presentations on a USB key to accelerate the loading process.

Aligning with the University of Dayton’s certification as a fair-trade university and its commitment to sustainability, SPHR21's menu will consist entirely of local and ethically sourced ingredients.

The conference staff will plan according to participants' dietary restrictions indicated during the registration process.

Curran Place includes four gender-neutral, single-use restrooms which will be identified on the map of the printed program.

Curran Place includes two lactation rooms which will be identified on the map of the printed program. Each access-controlled room includes a chair, table, outlet and a refrigerator. Conference staff will provide access via a visit card.

Curran Place has a designated quiet, interfaith reflection room which will be identified on the map of the printed program.

For those arriving to or departing from the conference venue, luggage and personal item storage is available in a secure location at Curran Place. Please check with the conference staff at the front desk.
