Fitz Center for Leadership in Community
Prospective River Stewards
No matter your major, we hope any student interested in the natural world considers applying to become a River Steward! Our cohorts bring together students from across the university with diverse interests in environmental education, environmental justice, outdoor recreation, sustainable agriculture, wildlife and habitat restoration, and many more. Every year our journey kicks off with the same kayaking paddle that inspired the vision for the program. Program participation involves weekly mini-course meetings where we go on field trips, host exciting speakers, engage in service, and work with our cohorts to plan and enact capstone projects—not a bad way to complete six credits at no cost. With support from our staff and from fellow classmates, stewards complete 30 hours of community engagement every semester, for which they earn a small scholarship. Additionally, stewards often line up internships and future jobs with our wonderful network of community partners.
Students interested in joining the River Stewards should keep an eye on our social media channels to learn about informational sessions to meet with our current cohorts.
