Exploring the World of Music Performance

The University of Dayton’s Summer Performance Institute (SPI) gives you the opportunity to study your craft with University of Dayton music faculty and other professional artists and performers. The curriculum of our five day camps is perfect for young musicians seeking to prepare for college auditions or for those who simply love to perform and wish to learn more. Presented in a college setting and utilizing campus-wide facilities, SPI sessions and events are geared for both learning and fun.

When contacting the Summer Performance Institute, please indicate the camp you are considering.

About the Summer Performance Institute

Workshops, instruction, most meals, and lodging for residential campers are all provided as a part of the SPI participants' campus life experience. However, there are personal items to consider when preparing for your stay at the institute.

The items listed below will make your visit more comfortable and are not provided with room and board. Some are necessary for our workshops and performances, while others will be useful for the many recreational opportunities provided during the week.

  • Casual clothes (each day starts with stretching)
  • An extra towel for yoga and warm ups each morning (you may also bring a yoga mat if you have one)
  • Alarm clock and watch
  • Personal grooming items
  • Extra linens if desired (sheets, pillow, blanket, towel, washcloth, soap, and tissues are supplied)
  • Raincoat or umbrella
  • Sweater or light jacket (for air-conditioned buildings)
  • Recreation: swimsuit, towel, sport clothes, tennis racquet, tote bag, etc.
  • Spending money for dinner, soft drinks, snacks, souvenirs
  • Notebook, staff paper and pencils
  • Recording device to record lessons
  • A short piece to perform for our "Play in" the first day
  • Concert attire for performance (dress below the knee for girls; jacket, shirt and tie for boys)

Resident campers will stay in a residence hall located on the University's main campus. All rooms include micro fridges and are fully air conditioned. Student residences are convenient to various facilities used by the Summer Performance Institute. Rooming is based on double occupancy.
