Film Studies
What is Film Studies?
The interdisciplinary minor in film studies (FLM) provides students an opportunity to explore one of the most popular and influential media from the 20th century to the present. Students study the history, theory and aesthetics of film and consider film from literary, philosophic, religious and creative perspectives. The minor complements many of the existing majors in the College of Arts and Sciences and enhances the academic preparation of students who are considering graduate school and/or careers in film criticism, screenwriting, or film production.
Film Studies complements any discipline by introducing students to the vocabulary, history, and structures that make film such a central part of our media landscape. Moreover, Film Studies is a doorway into engaging with diverse frames of reference, fresh narratives, and discovering a broader appreciation of the human experience through learning opportunities such as study abroad trips and community engagement options.
Students minoring in film studies must complete 13 semester hours of study, including four approved three-credit film courses in various disciplines and electives that receive committee-approval.

Film and media studies students often have interests in:
- Films and film history
- Filmmaking or other media production
- New media, such as video games and self-produced internet content
- Literary Studies
- Creative Writing
- Art and photography
- Journalism
This minor will prepare students for careers in academics, media production, media-related fields, or other jobs in the humanities. In a larger sense, it also provides students the skills and training to better understand the larger media landscape and its relationship to ourselves as consumers and citizens.
