Placement and Support

The most common route is to take ENG 100 in either semester of your first year and take ENG 200 in either semester of your second year. Here, you can see some alternate routes to fulfil the writing requirements at the University of Dayton based on your background and situation:

  • ENG 100: Students register for this course if they feel ready to make the transition from high school writing to college composition.
  • ENG 100A and 100B: Students may register for these courses if they would prefer to learn the skills taught in ENG 100 over the course of two semesters.
  • ENG 114: This course may be for students who are confident in their writing skills. This course is recommended for students who have achieved a score of Four or higher on the Advanced Placement (AP) Writing exam, though it is still possible to enroll in this course without taking the exam. This course also meets the second-year writing requirement. Students who earn credit for ENG 114 do not have to take ENG 200 the following year.
  • ENG 198: If students enroll in the Honors Program, they are registered for this course. This course also meets the second-year writing requirement. Students who earn credit for ENG 198 do not have to take ENG 200 the following year.
  • ASI 110/120: Students can also take ASI 110 during their first semester and ASI 120 during their second semester of their first year to meet the requirements of ENG 100 and 200 if they participate in the CORE program. ASI 110 and 120 also fulfills several other requirements in the Common Academic Program

Detailed course descriptions can be found in the Academic Catalog

  • ENG 200: After taking ENG 100 or ENG 100A/B, students can take ENG 200 during either semester of their second year at UD.

Detailed course descriptions can be found in the Academic Catalog

Need more help with placement?

For students who do choose to come to UD, as part of their enrollment process, they will participate in “First Year Choices” where they will make a lot of decisions. During this time, they will complete a “Directed Self-Placement” survey where it will be decided which English courses to enroll in.

Advanced placement Credits

If there are certain advanced placement credits that you would like to transfer, most are already noted upon your acceptance at UD. If you want to make sure your score will be counted for a class, check out UD's AP page in regards to how that works and what classes those scores can be applied to.
