Communication

What is great about the study of communication?

Communication is a driving force in our social lives and work lives. We live in a small, connected world. We create relationships, learn about other cultures, exchange information and build partnerships through communication. Whether we rely on social media, the Internet, cell phones, or face to face communication, we need to know how to communicate effectively and with confidence.

  • Communication knowledge and skills – the No. 1 trait employers look for in their employees
  • Provides career flexibility
  • Communication majors can go into a wide range of fields that requires quality writing, research, and presentation skills
  • Key to success in personal and professional life

  • Four different concentrations in which to specialize: Public Relations, Communication Management, Media Production and Journalism.
  • Outstanding faculty: UD’s Communication faculty have won numerous awards for teaching, research, and creative work. They lead the field, with three faculty serving in the prestigious role of academic journal editors. And, they are accessible to students. One-on-one advising is provided with open door policy.
  • The longest running study abroad program on campus: traveling to Rome, Prague, Australia and others.
  • Internship program: students can earn internship credit working in various organizations. Past students have interned with many employers, including ESPN, NBC, hospitals, and the Pentagon.
  • Flyer PR: The student-run agency allows students to participate in PR campaigns, engage with potential clients and help coordinate a Flyer PR sanctioned event. This hands-on experience provides students with the knowledge and experiential learning to prepare them for the PR industry.
  • Flyer TV: A student-run cable television station that brings together the talents of many UD students. While many media production students participate, Flyer TV is open to all majors.  The station produces original programming including news, sports, interesting interviews, student-produced independent shows and more.

  • Flyer News: UD's only student-run newspaper, the Flyer News is an organization for journalism majors but is open to any major. Published twice a week, Flyer News provides opportunities for students to write news, sports, arts and entertainment, and opinion or editorial articles.  Students can write for the independent student newspaper and website, even as a first-year student.
  • Flyers in Hollywood: This program allows juniors and seniors to travel to Las Vegas to attend the National Association of Broadcasting Conference, and visit and receive training at UNLV's Greenspun School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Students also head to Los Angeles, where they meet with alumni and industry professionals. Over the past two years, students have had the opportunity to tour Dreamworks and CBS Studios with University of Dayton alumni. The department subsidizes this trip for almost a dozen students each year.
  • Minors: easy to obtain a minor and/or double major
  • Lots of co-curricular development opportunities: Phi Beta Chi, PRSSA, Speech and Debate team, and more
