2017-2018
Exhibitions of the 2017-2018 Academic Year
The following exhibitions were shown in the gallery during the 2017-2018 academic year:

Haley Morris-Cafiero
Curated by: R. Darden Bradshaw
Reception: Feb. 22, 5 to 7 p.m. in the Radial Gallery
Exhibition: Feb. 22 through Mar. 22, 2018
This compendium of photographs and text in the exhibition Wait Watchers, on view at the University of Dayton’s Radial Gallery, spans a five-year journey in Haley Morris-Cafiero's artistic career. These self-portraits come together to boldly incite us to question the relationship of social media, selfie-culture, and the manner in which we critique each other.
In conjunction with the exhibition, Morris-Cafiero will deliver the department of art and design’s spring Visiting Artist Scholar Educator Lecture Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2018 at 6 p.m. in Sears Recital Hall.
During the reception visitors may obtain a parking pass from an Art and Design greeter at Fitz Hall main entrance. Outside of our reception hours, visitors may obtain a parking pass from the parking attendant located on the University Circle inside the main campus entrance. For additional information contact Radial Gallery Coordinator Nicholaus Arnold at 937-229-3204 or narnold1@udayton.edu.
About the Artist
Haley Morris-Cafiero positions her camera in public spaces – shopping malls, near tourist sites, and in commercial locales. She takes photos of herself as others pass her by. The camera is not hidden. In the resulting photographs she captures curious glances, sneers, and other expressions of the public’s unsolicited judgements of her.
Morris-Cafiero’s work invites us to reexamine the ways in which desire and the gaze have been culturally conditioned and our sense of license to take another’s inventory. In February 2013, after a few of the early images from this series were features in Lenscratch, a photo-world blog, there followed a series of stories in Huffington Post and the Daily Mail. As a result of this publicity, people began commenting about Morris-Cafiero and her images. These personally attacking, often hateful comments as well as those of encouragement and support became an added layer through which we enter into Morris-Cafiero’s work.
In this exhibition, the comments are juxtaposed with the images to invite us to discourse – about photography, social media, stereotypes, body image, and the gaze.
Morris-Cafiero received a B.A. in Photography and a B.F.A. in Ceramics from the University of North Florida in 1999. Nominated for the Prix Pictet in 2014 and a 2016 Fulbright finalist, Morris-Cafiero holds a M.F.A. from the University of Arizona in Art. She is an Associate Professor of Photography at Memphis College of Art in Memphis, TN.
The lecture and exhibition are free and open to the public.
