The recipient of the Dean Leonard A. Mann, S.M., Award of Excellence for 2021 is Megan Passon. Megan graduates with a double major in sociology and criminal justice studies, and a minor in political science. She was nominated for this award by Jeanne Holcomb.

Megan has demonstrated a high level of academic achievement, as evidenced by her 4.0 GPA in the sociology major, as well as her 3.942 overall GPA. She has always been, as her academic record shows, an excellent student at the top of her classes.

Beyond those metrics, Megan is a very astute student who clearly strives for excellence inside and outside of the classroom. She has demonstrated a passion for both the technical aspects of qualitative and quantitative analysis coursework and the application of social research. She has made good use of these skills with her interests in the areas of criminal justice and human rights. Megan has often connected class assignments to her interests in reducing inequality related to incarceration and the death penalty. Her research focuses heavily on criminal justice and racial disparities in Ohio.

Megan’s extracurricular activities on campus include paid employment and volunteer positions. She has taken on leadership roles in student organizations, student employee positions and service within the Criminal Justice Studies Program, where she has coordinated several service events. She has shown a high level of responsibility, organization and interpersonal skills.

Megan’s campus roles have included serving as treasurer and vice president of the criminal justice studies’ student organization, mentoring incoming first-year students for the Callings Program and directing a retreat for first-year students. She served as a Cross Cultural Connections Resident Assistant through her work with Housing and Residence Life.

She has taken her passion outside of the classroom, serving as a University of Dayton representative for the Catholic Social Ministry Gathering in Washington, D.C., where she advocated for legislation promoting gun control reform. She has facilitated film screenings and discussions for the Dayton community related to criminal justice reform and the development of a program to strengthen relationships between police officers and refugee communities in Dayton.

After graduation, Megan plans to continue her education in a Master of Public Policy program. She has been accepted into programs at Georgetown, the University of Maryland and the University of Virginia.

For Megan, service is not something that she does on the side. Rather, it is woven into and provides a framework for everything she does. Throughout her time at the University, her stellar academic record and her passion for community service embody the characteristics of Learn, Lead and Serve.

Dean Leonard A. Mann, S.M., Award of Excellence

The Dean Leonard A. Mann, S.M., Award of Excellence is presented to the senior with an outstanding record of scholarship, leadership and service. Students nominated for the 2020 award are:

  • Anna Blair
  • Mary McLoughlin
  • Sam Penewit
  • Joshua Segalawitz

The recipient of the Dean Leonard A. Mann, S.M., Award of Excellence for 2020 is Joshua Segalawitz. Josh graduates with the Bachelor of Arts in Human Rights and Sociology. He was nominated for this award by Miriamne Ara Krummel.

Josh’s time at the University has embodied the definition of these three words: learn, lead, serve. He arrived in the fall 2016 semester as an engineering student. With an ever-constant thirst for knowledge, he changed majors several times. By the end of his first semester, Josh had changed his major to mathematics. By the beginning of his sophomore year, he had added human rights as a second major. At the end of the first semester in his sophomore year, Josh found his home and made his final change to a double major in human rights and sociology. Throughout his college career, Josh has also nurtured an interest in gender and sexuality studies.

A large part of his academic moves involved finding a program of study that complemented Josh’s personal desire for tikkun olam (Hebrew for “healing the world”). He has always had a strong desire to go out and heal the bruised world rather than try to find solutions to problems with only numbers and mathematical equations.

During a summer project involving a UD Flyers program in Washington, DC he worked with the NGO, Pathfinders International. There he started developing a better sense of the issues inherent to global development. More specifically, Josh became aware of the personal and psychological issues surrounding people who are left out of this alleged “development.”

He later spent a summer in Malawi. Josh was able to see first-hand what effect global development has had on a small Malawi fishing village. In Malawi, as part of a practicum for a human rights and global development program, Josh studied the male-only space of the fishing industry. Discovering that masculinity is more fragile in Malawi than in the US, he learned the importance of the fishing industry to household economics, food security, and gender representations: a complex mixture of financial and gender issues.

The final part of Josh's sociological journey toward learning, leading, and serving came together in his senior thesis, where Josh researched incels (involuntary celibates). Josh bravely visited and traveled into social media sites and mingled with this troubled group of angry men. Josh’s willingness to engage in this type of research project displays unusual courage for an undergraduate student - he willingly entered into a dangerous space filled with violent, disenfranchised men in order to study the way these incels build their social world.

Even in his earliest years at the University, Josh was engaged in the study of disenfranchised members of society through his writing. His first-year essay, “Searching for a Nonexistent Childhood," in which he wrote about the lives of Holocaust survivors, was published in the University student publication Line for Line. The research for this essay included an examination of his own grandfather's experiences during that period in history.

Josh has shown his passion for tikkun olam in many ways throughout his time at the University. In addition to his excellence in scholarship, Josh interacts with fellow students and faculty with a good natured, open-minded, thoughtful, and generous approach. With his dedication and involvement, he truly embodies the Marianist tradition of learn, lead, and serve.
