The Department of Art and Design provides strong training in the professional degree areas, including the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Fine Arts, Photography, Graphic Design and Art Education. The department also offers the Bachelor of Arts in Art History and the Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts. Gallery 249, as part of the educational mission of the Department of Art and Design, serves to highlight the work of students, faculty, and invited professional artists.

The University Libraries host a number of arts exhibits and events each year; galleries are located on the 1st and 7th floors of Roesch Library. University of Dayton's Marian Library, located on the 7th floor of Roesch Library, is a globally recognized center for the study of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and holds the world's largest collection of printed materials and artifacts devoted to her, as well as nearly 3,000 Nativity sets and Marian art from around the world.
