Excellence in Physics

At the University of Dayton, our graduates find that the undergraduate physics degree provides them with the foundation for various careers in physics and other fields as well. We provide ample opportunities for our students to engage in exciting, meaningful research. Our low faculty-to-student ratio ensures a well balanced, personalized learning experience.

Programs of Study

Every Student Is Unique. So Are We.

Bachelor's Plus Master's Program

As an undergraduate physics major, you are eligible to apply to the Bachelor's Plus Master's program through the School of Engineering in electro-optics or materials engineering.

Electro-Optics Graduate Programs

Many of our undergraduate majors go on to graduate studies in physics and related areas. In a joint effort with the School of Engineering, we offer Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy programs in electro-optics.

Flexible Curriculum

The physical science major provides great flexibility in the curriculum. In addition to traditional physics, students can select courses from any of the physical and life sciences to provide curricular breadth, based upon their career interests and preferences.

Scholarships

James R. Schneider Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is named in honor of Dr. James R. Schneider, a member of the Department of Physics from 1964 to 1983, serving as both professor and department chair from 1975 to 1983.

Upon his passing, this scholarship was established in his name. Preference is given to third and fourth year physics majors, with the recipients being selected by the department chair in consultation with the faculty.

Marjorie Blasius Corcoran Scholarship

This scholarship is named in honor of Marjorie Blasius Corcoran, who was chair of the Department of Physics at Rice University until her passing. This scholarship supports students in their second, third and fourth years pursuing a major in a STEM field.

First preference is given to female students majoring in physics.

Betty Anthony Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2010 by Philip Anthony in memory of his wife. Dr. and Mrs. Anthony graduated from the University of Dayton, both majoring in physics.

Preference is given to students who are studying in the areas of physics or mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Undergraduate Research

Our students are very involved in faculty-mentored and independent research. They are often provided an opportunity to present their research at local, regional and national conferences and symposia.

Physics students are also invited to apply for summer research opportunities and the Dean's Summer Fellowship. Both programs give students the chance to gain practical experience applying what they learn in the classroom.
