The Schuerman Family Scholarship
Making your University your home.
Bill Schuerman worked as a student development professional in higher education for 36 years — 22 of which were at the University of Dayton as vice president for student development. In his career, his educational philosophy was deeply rooted in the Marianist tradition of educating the whole person — and he believes that living on campus is an important part of that experience for students.
“The learning that takes place outside the classroom plays a major educational role as young people strive to establish independence and autonomy, develop emotional stability, clarify values, find intimacy, consider career choices, and learn to live in communities that are often far different and more diverse than the ones they grew up in,” he said.
He and his wife, Ann, found a way to manifest this philosophy in their retirement by establishing the Schuerman Family Scholarship. The scholarship covers housing and meal plan costs for two local DECA graduates each year. “Ann and I hope that our gift will provide a residential experience for those students who, although supported by tuition scholarships, might not be able to afford the extremely important residential experience of UD.”
The Schuermans know just how important living in this special campus community is to the student experience — and thanks to their generosity, Travis Rallings '22 and many future Flyers will as well.
