Flyers across the nation continued the 27-year tradition of Christmas off Campus — sharing the spirit of the season by serving others.

Christmas off Campus began in 1990 in St. Louis when Brian R. ’79 and Renai A. Lowry ’75, co-leaders of the St. Louis Alumni Community, decided to plan something more than an alumni holiday party. In the spirit of their University of Dayton experience and support of its mission, the Lowrys organized an activity including a Mass and gathering gifts for families in the area through the local St. Patrick Center for homeless families.

The idea took off. In fiscal year 2017, alumni community Christmas off Campus events touched 35 schools or nonprofits and raised nearly $16,000 across the nation.

“Every year the Christmas off Campus event is a favorite of the students’, and they always beg to go again the following year. It is always a joy to see the kids’ faces and to hear them talk about all the fun they had on the ride home,” said Kaily Otten, program director for Catholic Charities Diocese of Charlotte. “We are so thankful for your passion for the community and the effort it takes to host such a fun, meaningful event for our kids!”

All of that passion and work pays off for more than just the guests at the Christmas off Campus events.

“The beautiful part of the experience is that it becomes difficult to discern who is serving whom, or, who is walking away from the experience changed,” said Joanne Browarsky, principal of St. Francis de Sales School in Cincinnati. “This encapsulates the Christmas off Campus event, evident by the visible joy on every participant’s face. And what could be more beautiful than sharing the joy of Christmas with one another, and ensuring all children experience this joy?”
