The summer between my sophomore year and junior year, as part of a University-sponsored academic fellowship, I created a detailed timeline of the history of the University’s Army ROTC program, from 1917 to 2017. The project took me into the archives for several months, and then to Adobe Illustrator to create the actual display portions. The final product now hangs in our ROTC building.

Spending an entire summer digging through archives may not appeal to everyone. But the day to day of my research brought the University’s past to life. The display helps other students more fully understand our rich past and why we're striving to become future officers within our Army and leaders within our nation.

Faculty and alumni make the UD education that supported my undergraduate research unique. My professors have helped me navigate both academia and my future profession within the military. They truly care about student success. On a trip with fellow students to Washington D.C., through the political science department, I had the chance to meet alumni who were more than happy to help students in their next steps beyond graduation.

Thanks to UD’s donors, I’ve been part of a thriving academic environment. Their donations shape the lives of our nation’s future leaders and create a culture of academic excellence at UD. Scholarships made it possible for me to come to UD, and funding through academic fellowships and grants supported my research of ROTC’s history at UD.

Now I’m well on my way to becoming a leader for the common good, starting with my commissioning as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army after graduating in May. After three months of basic officer courses, I hope to be stationed in Germany or Hawaii as an active duty armor officer.

Regardless of where my career leads, I’m prepared for the incredible experiences that lie ahead because of the ways I’ve been challenged and supported, as an academic and as a leader, here at UD.
