Endowment

What’s the deal with endowments?

Want a refreshing look at UD’s endowment? Now you can watch a short, fun video that explains what the endowment is in black and white: why we have it, what we can — and cannot — do with the funds, and why it is so important to the University. It’s a blast from the past that will forever fuel our future.

The University of Dayton’s endowment provides a perpetual stream of income to invest in our students, our faculty and staff, and the overall quality of our institution. It helps us to ensure that our Catholic, Marianist mission thrives in perpetuity, and that the educational value and experiences we provide for our Flyers continue to grow, too.

The endowment is made up of thousands of gifts from donors throughout the years who have, essentially, entered into a contract with the University to support Flyers forever. The endowment is designed to provide consistent, dependable support, and it cannot be used as a rainy-day fund. The principal is invested so that the assets grow, ensuring that the funds provide the same benefit

  • $1.1 billion

The value of UD’s long-term investment pool, which includes the endowment and the Flyer Investments Fund.

  • $803 million

The value of UD’s endowment (values as of June 30, 2023).

  • $63 million

The Flyer Investment Fund is managed by the Davis Center for Portfolio Management, the largest student-run investment fund in the nation.

  • $37.7 million

The approved appropriation from the endowment for use in fiscal year 2023-2024 to support students, faculty, and other university priorities.

  • $11.5 million

New commitments to the endowment received in fiscal year 2022-2023 to support scholarships and academic programs.

  • $1.6 million

    Realized bequests to the endowment.

The endowment provides a long-term, perpetual stream of income, which we invest in our students, our faculty and the quality of our institution. The more we are able to grow our endowment, the less we need to raise in tuition dollars from our families. That’s better for everybody.
