Studying in Roesch Library

Eligible Borrowers

  • Current faculty, staff, students, and Friends of the Library of the University of Dayton may borrow from the University Libraries. A valid University ID is the borrower card.
  • Members of SOCHE and OhioLINK institutions upon presentation of a valid ID from their home institutions may borrow from the University Libraries.
  • Marianists may receive a free courtesy borrowing card upon presentation of proper identification.

Faculty and staff, who check out books (except OhioLINK items) between January to June, will have their books due at the end of the semester in December.

Faculty and staff, who check out books (except OhioLINK items) between July and December, will have their books due at the end of the semester in May.

Course Materials: These items circulate for 1-4 hours; 1-3 days; or 1-3 weeks as directed by the professor. They may not be renewed or have a hold placed on them.

Current non-bound Journals: These items do not circulate.

Bound Journals can be checked out to Graduate students, University of Dayton faculty, and staff for 3 days.

Closed Stacks: These items generally circulate for 1 week.

Renewals may be made in person, by phone (229-4234) or by the patron using the “Your Library Account” option in the Online Catalog (http://flyers.udayton.edu)

Interlibrary Loan

Patrons with fines over $10.00 cannot check out books until the fine is paid. A receipt can be provided when the fine is paid.

The fine for OhioLINK materials overdue 30 days or longer will be $50 for each item returned to the library.

If material has been returned after an invoice has been sent but not yet paid, the patron is credited with the full amount of the invoice and is only charged late fines for the book.

If lost material is returned within two years after it has been paid for, the patron will be reimbursed for the amount paid less the processing fee and overdue fines.

If material has been declared lost, but is eventually found on the library shelves, the patron will receive full credit for all charges including the processing and overdue fines.

Returned checks will be subject to a $20 service charge.

Student Record Holds

A hold will be placed on a student’s record when a library bill is not paid. 

  • Fines of $100 or more will result in diplomas being withheld.
  • Fines over $10 will result in transcripts and registration being withheld.

  When a fine is resolved, the library staff will clear the student record.

Identification Cards

A valid identification card is required for all borrowing transactions.

A lost University ID card or UD Library membership card should be reported immediately at the Circulation/Reserve desk. University of Dayton users should also report the lost card to the Registrars Office. New University ID cards are obtained through the OneCard office in the Powerhouse. The owner of a lost or stolen ID card is financially responsible for all library materials borrowed on the card before he or she reports its loss to the library.

Address Requirements

Borrowers are obligated to respond to notices from the library. It is the borrower's responsibility to keep the University informed of his or her current email and local address. The borrower is liable for fines and processing fees whether or not he or she receives mailed notices and invoices.

Damaged Materials

Patrons will be charged $15 for books that have been damaged but can be repaired.

Items beyond repair will be charged according to the library policy on lost materials.

Special Collections Borrowing

US Catholic Collection

US Catholic collection items located at the library’s off-site storage facility circulate to Undergraduate, Graduate, Doctoral, Faculty and Staff for 3 weeks with six renewals. US Catholic collection items located on the 3rd floor and ground storage circulate to Graduate, Doctoral, Faculty and Staff only with one renewal.

If borrowers would like to browse the US Catholic collection on the 3rd floor or in ground storage they must do so during their open hours or by appointment with either the Curator of Rare Books or the Archivist and Collections Librarian.

Other University of Dayton students may use materials from this collection while in the library.  Materials will be checked out for up to 12 hours for use in the library.

Patrons not affiliated with the University of Dayton will be able to view the materials either in the 3rd floor reading room or in the reference room.

Marian Library

The Marian Library is a specialized research library, containing some rare and irreplaceable items.  Such materials are non-circulating.  Other items, at the discretion of the Marian Library staff, may circulate.  All non-circulating materials will be provided for use in the reading room and may be kept there on reserve.

University Archives

Generally, University Archives material may not be borrowed.
