In Memoriam

Judge Rachel Hutzel '91 died Aug. 25, 2012, from cancer. She was 56. Hutzel joined the Ohio 12th District Court of Appeals in 2011, becoming the first woman to serve on the court since it was created in 1983.

Previously, she was county prosecutor of Warren County, Ohio. When she was first elected to that position, she made the prosecution of child abuse cases a priority and helped open the Child Advocacy Center of Warren County in 2008. She first joined the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office in 1993.

“She was the real thing,” said Warren County Commissioner Pat South told the Dayton Daily News. “She was passionate about law and about taking care of those least able to protect themselves. She was fierce in the courtroom but was one of the most compassionate people I’d ever met.”

Hutzel chaired the Victim Advocate Committee, served on the Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association's Executive and Legislative Committees and on the boards of Elizabeth’s New Life Center and the Warren County Foundation.
