von Ohain Fuels and Combustion Center Receives New Grants and Posts Hiring for Researchers

The von Ohain Fuels and Combustion Center recently received several grants:
Modeling and Simulation

The von Ohain Fuels and Combustion Center received a three-year multi-million dollar grant from the Advanced Virtual Engine Test Cell, Inc. (AVETEC) of Springfield, Ohio, for research in the areas of modeling and simulation of gas turbine combustors, thermal management of aerospace vehicles, and common collaborative computer environment. AVETEC is a nonprofit public benefit research organization and a strategic partner in the National Aerospace Leadership Initiative (NALI) established by Congress. The Center's researchers will use supercomputers to facilitate a dramatic reduction in the cost and time it takes to design, develop, and test new combustors and investigate thermal management issues for commercial and military applications. We are excited by our partnership with AVETEC, GE-Aircraft Engines, the University of Cincinnati, Ohio State University, the Air Force Research Laboratory, and NASA-Glenn Research Center, and the future possibilities this partnership holds.

Emissions Studies

NASA’s Propulsion 21 funding has continued for an additional year in support of our studies on gaseous and soot emissions using a high-pressure well-stirred reactor (WSR). Our WSR test facility is also being used by the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Washington, D.C., for developing detailed chemical kinetics mechanisms.

Nozzle Coking Studies

Parker Hannifin (Gas Turbine Fuel System Division), of Mentor, Ohio, has awarded a grant to study fuel nozzle coking and deposition issues for diesel and jet fuels in gas turbines for power generation and aero engine applications. These results will be used to make assessments of fuel injector life, reliability, and durability.
