Welcome to the Professional Development Workshops!

The School of Education & Health Sciences is accredited nationally by NCATE (the Standard of Excellence in Teacher Preparation) and regionally by the Higher Learning Commission of North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Purpose


The School of Education & Health Sciences is committed to supporting compassionate professionals in the fields of teaching, higher administration, exercise science and human services by providing opportunities to earn workshop credit toward maintaining licensure renewals. At a reduced rate, you can earn up to six semester hours (with prior approval) of workshop credit to apply toward a master's degree in education.

Earning Workshop Credit


There are several convenient ways to earn workshop credit:

  • Create a workshop (pdf) within your school or organization.
  • Attend an upcoming workshop (on campus or off campus).
  • Register for an online video workshop through Educational Impact Academy.
  • Contact other approved workshop providers who offer University of Dayton workshop credit.

Record of Workshop Credit


All completed graduate workshops through the University of Dayton School of Education & Health Sciences are awarded non-graded workshop credit or “CR” on official transcripts. The credit, or “CR,” is equal to or better than the letter grade of a “B.”

An automatic grade report will be mailed to you approximately one week after the grading period. This report will reflect the credit on your University of Dayton student record. An automatic grade report is not an official transcript.

Spring 2014 Workshops

Class 1

Developing and Improving Attitudes and Character: 
"A Vital Key to Student Success"


This workshop is designed for all educators and will stress the implementation of the “Character Card” system, a proven method for improving the attitude and character of students. This hands on class will challenge participants to develop their own plan for character development. Mr. Jim Place will be the primary presenter for this workshop.

  • When: Saturday, March 22, 2014, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m.
  • Where: Holiday Inn Capitol Square, in downtown Columbus, 175 E. Towne Street
  • Credit: Assignments must be submitted by April 18. This is a spring 2014 term workshop. Non-graded (pass/fail) professional development credit will be awarded the first week of May 2014.
  • Lunch: A full lunch will be provided.
Class 2

Developing and Implementing a Character Education Program in a Public School System: Successes and Challenges


Mr. Jim Place will use the 2010 Ohio School of Character Winner, Hamilton City Schools Character Program as a way of challenging participants to develop a Character Program to fit their situation.

  • When: Saturday, March 29, 2014, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m.
  • Where: Holiday Inn Capitol Square, in downtown Columbus, 175 E. Towne Street
  • Credit: Assignments must be submitted by April 18. This is a spring 2014 term workshop. Non-graded (pass/fail) professional development credit will be awarded the first week of May 2014.
  • Lunch: A full lunch will be provided.

Additional Information


  • Pre-registration: There is a registration fee of $50.00 per class. Pre-registration is required and must be received five days before the workshop. Your $50.00 non-refundable registration fee must accompany your registration form. Seating is limited, so please register as soon as possible. You will receive a confirmation email to confirm the receipt of your registration
  • Tuition and fees: $200.00 per semester hour. Participants have the option of taking the class for one, two or three credits. Additional independent study will be required if taking the class for two or three credits. Payment for the university tuition will be collected on the day of the workshop. This is a pass/fail course.

Summer One 2014 Workshops


Class 1

Developing and Improving Attitude and Character: A Vital Key to Student Success


This course is designed for all educators and will stress the implementation of the “Character Card” system, a proven method for improving the attitude and character of students. This hands on class will challenge participants to develop their own plan for character development. 

  • When: Monday, June 9, 2014, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration at 8:00 a.m. 
  • Where: UD River Campus at 1700 S. Patterson Rd. in Dayton, Ohio (former NCR Hdqtrs). Please enter through Main Entrance and park in RI (to the right) South lot. 
  • Lunch: A full lunch will be provided.
Class 3

Character Education: Best Practices


Six classroom teachers will share their proven method for improving the attitude and character of students. At times the class will split into Elementary, Middle School and Secondary. This hands on class will challenge participants to develop their own plan for character development.   

  • When: Tuesday, June 10, 2014, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration at 8:00 a.m. 
  • Where: UD River Campus at 1700 S. Patterson Rd. in Dayton, Ohio (former NCR Hdqtrs). Please enter through Main Entrance and park in RI (to the right) South lot. 
  • Lunch: A full lunch will be provided.

Class 1

Developing and Improving Attitude and Character: A Vital Key to Student Success

Class 7

Closing the Gap: Promoting Education & Character Values in Students from Low Economic Backgrounds

The goal of this class is to provide participants with tools to help close the inequity gap between students in the classroom, namely those from low economic backgrounds. In order to address the needs of this population, class participants will discover programs and strategies to implement in to their classrooms. Participants will develop a plan to incorporate a systematic change in their pedagogy or classroom to better educate students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Mr. Jim Place and Mrs. Carolyn Heller will be the primary presenters for this workshop.

  • When: Friday, June 13, 2014, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration at 8 a.m.

Class 4

Character Education: The Key to Success in Today's World


This course features speakers who will share their ideas on how to prepare successful future employees.  This hands on course will challenge participants to develop their own plan for character development.  

  • When: Monday, June 16, 2014, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m.
  • Where: UD River Campus; 1700 S. Patterson Rd.; Dayton, OH (Former NCR Hdqtrs.)  Please enter through Main Entrance and park in RI (to the right) South lot.
  • Credit: All “Summer Two” term 2014 workshop assignments are due to Jim Place by Friday, July 15th.  Non-graded PD credit will be posted the week of August 5, 2014.

Character Education: Positive Strategies to Decrease Bullying


This course focuses on strategies and plans that have successfully worked in various districts throughout the State of Ohio to build a more positive school climate, which decreases the amount of bullying. 

  • When: Tuesday, June 17, 2014, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m.

The University of Dayton in collaboration with Educational Impact (EI) Academy is pleased to provide workshop credit for Educational Impact Academy online video programs. EI is a premier online provider of professional development videos for teachers, administrators and university students.

Greene County Career Center Adult Workforce Division


The University of Dayton, in collaboration with the Greene County Career Center, is offering workshop credit (graduate and undergraduate) for online, on-demand, self-paced Professional Development courses. “Ed2Go” instructor-led courses are comprehensive six-week courses, accessible 24/7 from anywhere with an Internet connection. Please click the "requirements" tab of the course you choose to ensure computer compatibility.   

  • Courses can be purchased at www.ed2go.com/greene.
  • UD graduate workshop credit can be purchased with a minimum of 12.5 completion hours. A reflection paper will be required if the hours completed are fewer than 12.5 hours. Montgomery County Educational Service Center Online "Video" Course Offerings


The University of Dayton, in collaboration with the Montgomery County ESC, is offering PD workshop credit for online, on-demand, self-paced Professional Development courses. Learn directly from expert authors, instructor-led video courses accessible 24/7 from anywhere with an Internet connection. You have one year from the purchase date to activate the course, and six months from activation to complete the course.
