Profile

Nicole Charles, D.M.A. teaches applied flute and flute choir to majors and non-majors.  She earned the D.M.A. and M.M. in flute performance with Professor Katherine Borst Jones at The Ohio State University and her undergraduate degree with Professor Francile Bilyeu of Virginia Commonwealth University. Also a passionate Suzuki instructor, Dr. Charles pursued her certification under the tutelage of Toshio Takahashi, Takeaki Miyame, Kenichi Ueda, and Laura Larson.

In addition to teaching, Dr. Charles is an avid performer. She performs with the Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra and has also performed with the Central Ohio Symphony, Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, MidOhio Chamber Orchestra, and the New Albany Symphony Orchestra. She has given numerous recitals as a soloist, including performances and masterclasses at Sayama, Japan. As a member of the Stratosphere Flute Quartet, she performed at several NFA conventions. Dr. Charles also enjoys collaborating with unique ensembles, especially with traditional instruments and folk-based music. Her most recent collaboration included playing with Music From China, where she performed a piece written for flute, erhu, and pipa.

Dr. Charles is the Central Ohio Flute Association (COFA) Flute Choir Showcase Coordinator.  Her choirs perform at the annual COFA Flute Festival each year. Her active involvement in the flute choir community has led to many wonderful performance opportunities, including a live televised broadcast on Fox News. Her private lesson students have won awards at local, state, and national levels.
